Keeping watch

Waiting in the dusk,
Bending the budding branch,
Since last Spring, older, wiser,
A Crow-eye to the restless fir,
Keeping watch,
Keen to give short shrift,
To the wood doves' play,
And the care-free Magpies,
And to the strident Crows,
With a stridency of his own,
Keeping watch,
Dusk shades into night,
Amidst the lacy fronds,
Touching beaks to see,
The phosphorescing eggs,
And the Owl hoots, exultant,
To hear her gently cooing brood,
Keeping watch.
